As it sometimes happen, we see a piece of clothing which grabs our attention due to its material, texture or patters but for some reason it’s the wrong size so we can’t buy it, other times we might be a little short on the “money department” which makes it impossible to buy designer clothing. All of these problems could easily be solved if only you knew how to sew. By learning this useful skill anyone can customize his/her wardrobe as well as those special items around the house; and just like many people who know how to sew can tell us, sewing your own clothing and other items can be significantly less expensive compared to buying them in stores.

Taking all of these factors in consideration we arrive to the conclusion that learning how to sew is important, especially if “fashion” is your thing, the steps and tips shown below can help you get started:

- The very first step for beginners involves getting acquainted with all of the sewing tools which will be used to modify and create pieces of clothing, a good way of doing just that is by either buying a used sewing machine or by borrowing one from a friend, if you happen to have the manual handy it is highly recommended to read it entirely, make sure to specially read the parts about safety steps since the last thing you want to do is hurt yourself while using one of these machines. Starting with an used machine will help you develop your skills and knowledge making it a lot easier on yourself when you decide to buy a bigger-more expensive machine. After following these steps it is also recommended to sign up for a sewing class because this is a skill you will need to develop gradually and there is no one better than a sewing teacher to help you master this art, these classes are quite common and can be found in community schools which start at different levels.

- Practice makes perfect, finding easy to follow sewing patterns to practice with will help you accomplish your goals. Start by sewing on simple pieces of clothing such as a shirts or even pillow covers, avoid having to sew complex patterns or sewing on expensive pieces of clothing you have just purchased; if for some reason you fail on the fist project the piece would be ruined, so do yourself a favor and keep it as simple as possible while learning.

- Give yourself time and be patient, the practice of sewing and learning how to sew requires a calmed and relaxed person so make sure you do not take too many drinks with sugar and caffeine, this will only make things harder for you. If you need to cut part of the clothing to make it the right size make sure you measure at least twice and be as precise as possible. The first few pieces might not fit your tastes or might have something wrong (too short, too long, etc.) do not be discouraged and keep practicing, at the end you’ll see it was all worth the wait.

Right after you finish your fist project make sure to start on the next one. This will ensure all the things you have learned stay fresh in your memory and will help you to acquire new skills. Following these simple steps for beginners will ensure you learn how to sew the right way, giving you the great skill to later on customize/create your own clothing.

many ways that individuals can inexpensively obtain the clothes that they need. Some of those ways include shopping at discount stores, shopping at thrift stores or going to garage sales. In addition, if the individual is so inclined they may wish to make their own clothes. This process involves the use of fabric, a pattern and sewing thread. Also, in regards to thread, it is important to select the right thread for the garment that is being created. Types of thread can include nylon, cotton, polyester, etc. Another type of thread is silk sewing thread. In fact when using silk sewing thread it is important to know what the texture of this thread is like and for what clothes creations it should be used for. The Texture Of Silk Sewing Thread Each of the sewing threads that are available on the market today are of different textures and generally used with specific purposes in mind. For example if fabrics have little or no give to them and are being sewn together then the appropriate thread to use is cotton thread. This is because cotton thread has no elasticity or give to it. On the other hand, fabrics that are being sewn together that have a give and take to them should utilize a different type of sewing thread. One of these types of fabrics is polyester. Therefore in matching the texture and characteristics of polyester, a polyester sewing thread should be utilized to stitch the pieces of polyester fabric together. In addition, if utilizing a fine cotton fabric or silk then a different type of thread should be used. That thread is silk sewing thread. This is because silk or fine cotton is very thin or can be classified as a gentle fabric. Therefore, the same type of thread should be utilized to sew these pieces of fabric together. In addition, the texture of silk sewing thread is one that has more give to it. Therefore, because of this elasticity the thread that should be used should be as the same garment fabric which has elasticity to it as well. On the other hand if a nylon sewing thread was used to sew together pieces of delicate silk then there would be no give and take with the material that is sewn together using this style of thread. Therefore, the material would eventually separate itself from each other. Uses Of Silk Sewing Thread Examples of items that should be sewn together utilizing silk sewing thread are those items that can be classified as delicate in nature. Specifically those items could be fine lingerie or garments that are sheer in nature. http://needle-sewing.blogspot.com

Parenting Tips

Hello hello :)
Since I was in high school, I made my own clothings (from a t-shirts, jeans, bags, to dresses) using a really simple handheld sewing machine with no special options. It’s really hard especially because it takes forever! :-(
I’m planning on getting a sewing machine - which I have NO KNOWLEDGE of.

I heard SINGER or BROTHER are good… but there were so many options from quickstitch to 100-stitch, manual to automatic, electronic to computerized..etc. not to mention these patterns of zigzag, straight, shaped..etc.

My head hurts so much. :(
The cheapest one I found though, however, was the SewPro QuikStitch Sewing Machine (SP-402). Is this good enough?

I’d like a simple and affordable sewing machine that I could quickly learn (to do almost all the basic-moderate sewing… making clothes and accessories!)

Please help meee!! Thank you :-) Huh??? What’s these stitches and reverse gear??? I’m so confused! :-(

My sewing genie either gobs up under the pressure foot (sorry if my terminology is a little off, bare with me the last time I used a sewing machine was 35 years ago in “home ec”) where the bobbin is, or the upper thread breaks. I do not have the instruction manual in hand, but had it read to me over the phone, so I think I have the thread placed properly (not sure, of course). I did have some luck, so I know there is hope. Thanks for your time :)

When it comes to sewing, reading patterns can be somewhat intimidating, the first thing we must know is that there are several pattern types and each may have its own design variations or what many people refer to as “views”. Beginners may start with basic patterns which show traces which are easy to follow, these starter patterns don’t often require people to get too technical as far as measurements, fabrics and designs.

When buying a pattern its is important to pay attention to the front and the back of the pattern envelope. The front may show you the end product or how the pattern would look if you followed all the instructions, there are of course some variations and customizations you can do in order to end up with an original piece, that of course depends of the project you are taking, it could be home decor or clothes.

The back of the envelope shows you important summaries and descriptions which must be read if you want to know what you are getting, sometimes people buy these projects because the picture of the finished product is quite beautiful however the traces within the pattern itself may be hard to decipher. That’s why beginners may feel they are trying to understand a foreign language. Another critical part you must pay attention to is the design and the type of fabrics this project require, this will give you an idea of the amount of fabric you must buy.

When buying the fabric you must pay attention to its designs and determine if it has nap, this last concept is met if your fabric has a one way design, fuzzy texture and even or uneven plaid, for instance lets say that you get fabric which has dancing penguins printed in one direction, if you don’t buy enough fabric you may end up cutting and sewing parts which don’t fit with the rest of the design, for example some penguins will be facing right and others left.

If you will be working with fuzzy texture it is also important to buy more fabric, this is the type of material that when it is brushed in one direction it’s smooth but when brushed in an opposite direction it feels rough. When you feel this resistance you can see that the color of the material has turned darker and the color is uneven.

When you open the envelope you will find a set of instructions which must be followed, if you don’t understand a certain term you can also use the glossary which most of them have. This is always the first step, do not rush and try to take on the project if you haven’t read the instructions, this never bears good results. You will also find the pattern pieces which can be kept for future projects if you buy a piece of pattern tracing material, many people find this useful since they don’t want to end up buying the same pattern over and over. You will find that some patterns have been traced on soft paper and others on harder materials, the hard material usually has printed the master pattern which should be laid out on the fabrics as shown on the diagrams included.

It is important that you organize your space and keep all the instructions right in front of you, that way you will follow them without having pieces of pager lying under fabrics and other materials. Remember that you will be dealing with needles and other sharp objects so keeping everything in order will help you avoid any accidents.

chines are one of the greatest inventions that have resulted in large scale production of high-quality clothing at a very low cost. The markets are flooded with a variety of sewing machines as one can choose. From low-end mechanical sewing machines to high-end computerized machines, one can make his pick depending on its requirement.

The low-end sewing machines are highly suited for infrequent uses at homes that do not require any extra complex designs. The most sophisticated sewing machines, on the other hand have computers that ensure precision in movement of needles besides providing user with a wide range of stitches to choose from. While some have in-built designs stored in them, others make it possible to download different patterns from Internet that helps it easier to move with trend set by the fashion industry.

The sewing machines have seen a lot many changes over the years. From a simple mechanism that revolved around the loop stitching system, the sewing machines evolved to create the most sophisticated machines that have sensors which can speak about the arrangements of the components in the machine to ensure maximum precision. The intricate designs and the exactitude of the work have given these complex machines a primary position in the textile industry. Today there are mechanical sewing machines, electronic sewing machines and computerized sewing machines.

Things to be considered while buying a sewing machine:

The presence of a variety of sewing machines with additional features makes the choice a difficult one. Sewing machine reviews are the best way for identifying the machine suited to oneís requirements. The experience reflected by the other buyers in the review help a potential buyer to make an informed decision.

Some of the basic factors that are to be considered while buying the machine are mentioned below:

1. Identifying the reason behind the purchase of the sewing machine defines the speed requirement, precision and other requisites. For example, an amateur need to be on the look for a simple machine before trying out a commercial model with complex stitches as a complex machine can be intimidating preventing one from sewing.

2. The sewing machine reviews can also throw light on the various options open before him for the allotted amount. Making a wise decision of the appropriate brand can add to the enjoyment from sewing.

In short, a deep look into the features portrayed by the reviews can assist in buying a machine with the required set of features at bargain prices.

Children’s Beds

Think it can’t be done? Think again – an apron is a very simple thing to sew, and you can easily make your own pattern. Once you have your pattern, you can cut out and sew one up in 15 minutes or less!

To Make Your Pattern

We need to take 3 measurements:

Length - measure from mid way between your chest and the bottom of your neck to about 6″ above your knee, plus 1″ (for the hem).

Waist - measure from this same spot to your waist plus 5/8th” (for the top hem).

Width - measure your hips at their widest point (complete circumference, not side to side). Now, take off 14″ (the apron doesn’t need to close at the back, just go around your hips), and then divide by 2.

Now, take some pattern paper and fold it in half lengthways. Put a mark on the paper, on the fold, where your length measurement is. So, for example, if I am 28″ from upper chest to above the knee, I would make a mark on the fold 28″ from the top of the paper.

Now, mark off where your b>waist measurement is on the same fold. For me, this is 12″ down, so I make a mark on the fold 12″ from the top of the paper.

Now take a ruler, and at your waist mark point, mark a line out as far as your width measurement (now you can see why we divided by 2, as we have the pattern paper folded over!).

Now just mark a straight line from your width marking down to where your length marking is, then across to the fold (to see a diagram of this, just click here).

For the top of the apron, draw a line on the diagonal from your width marking to the top of the pattern paper. The width of the top of the apron is a personal choice. I have mine around 8″, but the fuller your figure, the more generous you should be. Just don’t forget to add on hem allowance for each side, and then divide by 2. So for my apron, my diagonal line hits the top of the pattern paper 4½” from the fold (8″ wide, plus 2 hem allowances of 5/8th” divided by 2).

Materials & Notions

For the waistband and neck, I use cotton webbing, about ¾” wide, and in similar colour to the fabric I am using. This is so much easier and quicker than making your own! For the waist ties, you will need 40″ (cut in two pieces). For the neck, you need 1 piece only (which we will sew into the top hem). Take your tape measure and measure from one side of your chest, round the back of your neck, to the other side of your chest (where the top of the apron will be). For me, this is 20″, so I would buy 22″ (extra for hem allowance).

The fabric for your apron should medium weight, and can be any colour or pattern you choose – check out the remnants table for a real bargain! For me, a yard of fabric will do in almost any width, but if you are not sure, take your pattern or measurements with you to the fabric store – the assistants there will help you get the right amount of fabric.

Making Your Apron

OK, doing all the above will take you more than 15 minutes, but you only have to do all those measurements and making of the pattern once. Now, let’s make our apron!

Lay out your fabric, pin on the pattern, and cut out.

Cut your cotton webbing into the three pieces – one neck piece, and two waist ties.

Sew a hem on one end of each of the two waist ties.

Now, pin up your hem allowance all around the apron. Once that is complete, we need to go back and insert the waist ties and neck piece (to see a diagram of this, just click here).

The waist ties should be inserted into your folded over hem allowance at the point where your waist line starts to go up on the diagonal. With the apron right side down (hem facing you), slip the webbing into the hem allowance, and then fold back over the hem allowance – we want to stitch over the top of the webbing and hem. Make sure you put the webbing in the right way so that your hem at the other end will be facing inwards once the apron hem is sewn!

Now do the same with each end of the neck webbing. The neck ends are attached at the top outer edges of the apron.

Needlework is one of the most cost effective and fun hobbies a person can have. The person creating the needlework focuses on a pastime that is both creative and relaxing at the same time. When the work is completed there is a beautiful creation that can be worn or used in the home as a decorative item. As time requires everyone to live a busy and chaotic lifestyle this type of hobby is becoming more and more scarce. If you have the time and patience you can develop the skills to turn a hobby into a marketable product that is of a higher quality than the over produced machine made items that are found most often today. This should allow the person practicing needlecraft the ability to claim a space in the home that is just for needlework. A place to keep your tools and supplies is absolutely necessary to turning this hobby into a great home business. If you need to get your hobby room in order here are some great tips.

No matter the type of needlework you are doing, quilting, sewing clothing, craft items or beautiful embroidery you will need to keep your space separated into areas for each task. You will no doubt have special tools and equipment that are used for each task of your fabric hobby.

You will have to wash many of the items that you use in your fabric hobby before you use them. Some fabrics must be shrunk before you are able to cut them. If you work a beautiful piece of embroidery onto a fabric that has a stain or smudge of dirt your work will be ruined. You should make sure that part of your home’s laundry area is set-aside for the special fabric cleaners that you use. Cleaners for spot removal and delicate items should be stored separately from the regular laundry detergent that is used in the home. You should keep your hand wash cleaners near the kitchen sink so that you can take advantage of the larger sink capacity and the counter space in the kitchen. Keep some towels nearby for this purpose.

An area to dry the fabrics after they have been cleaned is very important as well. Some fabrics will need to be stretched out on a rack for drying. You should make sure that your drying area is kept away from things that can cause the fabric to become dirty again while it is being dried. You don’t want the smell of last night’s dinner to become infused in your freshly washed fabric. You will be able to dry some of your fabrics in your dryer, but they will need to be immediately hung up or folded to keep the wrinkles away. Other fabrics should not be dried in the dryer and will need to be kept in a safe area.

Fabrics, once they are dried will also need to be pressed. You can accomplish this task in your laundry room or in the sewing room. The size of the fabric will determine whether you can use an ironing board or will need a larger area like a table to press the fabric. You should use a non-stick pressing sheet when you press your fabrics. This should also be kept near your sewing machine in case you must make some touch ups to a piece of fabric that you are working on.

You should also have an area that is designated for cutting patterns. You can use a table and chair, but make sure that it is comfortable for you. The most important thing about your cutting area is that it is the correct height for you to work comfortably and it has adequate light. Use the same table that you use for pressing in your sewing room.

The assembly of your fabric items will need a special area as well. You will need a spot to sew together pieces of a quilt or making a counted cross-stitch piece. A spot that has a comfortable chair and a table for the pieces of your work works the best. The space should be well lit to reduce eyestrain when you are working on very small areas and a place to keep the tools that you will need.

When you have a well thought out workspace you will find that your work is much easier to accomplish. All of the tools that you will need will be close by and everything will be well organized. The work will proceed much more efficiently if your workspace is planned and thought out. It is worth the time and effort to create a workspace for your sewing hobby.
