On a simplistic pattern for sewing it shows the notches facing inwards. Do i cut them inwards or not?

I’ve been searching online for a free cuttlefish pattern but I can’t find one anywhere. I’ve decided that I have to make my own, but I’m not really sure how I should go about doing it. Should I leave extra space in the pattern to allow for sewing mistakes? That’s really the only specific question I can come up with. As you can see, I am totally lost on where to start so some help would be appreciated. :]
