Taking all of these factors in consideration we arrive to the conclusion that learning how to sew is important, especially if “fashion” is your thing, the steps and tips shown below can help you get started:
- The very first step for beginners involves getting acquainted with all of the sewing tools which will be used to modify and create pieces of clothing, a good way of doing just that is by either buying a used sewing machine or by borrowing one from a friend, if you happen to have the manual handy it is highly recommended to read it entirely, make sure to specially read the parts about safety steps since the last thing you want to do is hurt yourself while using one of these machines. Starting with an used machine will help you develop your skills and knowledge making it a lot easier on yourself when you decide to buy a bigger-more expensive machine. After following these steps it is also recommended to sign up for a sewing class because this is a skill you will need to develop gradually and there is no one better than a sewing teacher to help you master this art, these classes are quite common and can be found in community schools which start at different levels.
- Practice makes perfect, finding easy to follow sewing patterns to practice with will help you accomplish your goals. Start by sewing on simple pieces of clothing such as a shirts or even pillow covers, avoid having to sew complex patterns or sewing on expensive pieces of clothing you have just purchased; if for some reason you fail on the fist project the piece would be ruined, so do yourself a favor and keep it as simple as possible while learning.
- Give yourself time and be patient, the practice of sewing and learning how to sew requires a calmed and relaxed person so make sure you do not take too many drinks with sugar and caffeine, this will only make things harder for you. If you need to cut part of the clothing to make it the right size make sure you measure at least twice and be as precise as possible. The first few pieces might not fit your tastes or might have something wrong (too short, too long, etc.) do not be discouraged and keep practicing, at the end you’ll see it was all worth the wait.
Right after you finish your fist project make sure to start on the next one. This will ensure all the things you have learned stay fresh in your memory and will help you to acquire new skills. Following these simple steps for beginners will ensure you learn how to sew the right way, giving you the great skill to later on customize/create your own clothing.

How to Read a Sewing Pattern
Filed Under Uncategorized | Leave a Comment
When buying a pattern its is important to pay attention to the front and the back of the pattern envelope. The front may show you the end product or how the pattern would look if you followed all the instructions, there are of course some variations and customizations you can do in order to end up with an original piece, that of course depends of the project you are taking, it could be home decor or clothes.
The back of the envelope shows you important summaries and descriptions which must be read if you want to know what you are getting, sometimes people buy these projects because the picture of the finished product is quite beautiful however the traces within the pattern itself may be hard to decipher. That’s why beginners may feel they are trying to understand a foreign language. Another critical part you must pay attention to is the design and the type of fabrics this project require, this will give you an idea of the amount of fabric you must buy.
When buying the fabric you must pay attention to its designs and determine if it has nap, this last concept is met if your fabric has a one way design, fuzzy texture and even or uneven plaid, for instance lets say that you get fabric which has dancing penguins printed in one direction, if you don’t buy enough fabric you may end up cutting and sewing parts which don’t fit with the rest of the design, for example some penguins will be facing right and others left.
If you will be working with fuzzy texture it is also important to buy more fabric, this is the type of material that when it is brushed in one direction it’s smooth but when brushed in an opposite direction it feels rough. When you feel this resistance you can see that the color of the material has turned darker and the color is uneven.
When you open the envelope you will find a set of instructions which must be followed, if you don’t understand a certain term you can also use the glossary which most of them have. This is always the first step, do not rush and try to take on the project if you haven’t read the instructions, this never bears good results. You will also find the pattern pieces which can be kept for future projects if you buy a piece of pattern tracing material, many people find this useful since they don’t want to end up buying the same pattern over and over. You will find that some patterns have been traced on soft paper and others on harder materials, the hard material usually has printed the master pattern which should be laid out on the fabrics as shown on the diagrams included.
It is important that you organize your space and keep all the instructions right in front of you, that way you will follow them without having pieces of pager lying under fabrics and other materials. Remember that you will be dealing with needles and other sharp objects so keeping everything in order will help you avoid any accidents.

Helpful Sewing Techniques
Filed Under Uncategorized | Leave a Comment
Before you begin any sewing projects, it is best to get all your sewing equipment together and have it in a convenient location near your sewing machine. You can purchase your sewing supplies at a crafts or fabric store or from online stores.
Be sure and make a list of what you need before you go shopping so you don’t forget a vital piece of equipment that will prevent you from starting a project. Having the right tools for each project will make any sewing technique easier to complete. You will save time and effort.
Sewing techniques for any project needs to include needles, thread, scissors, fabric and a sewing machine for all your crafts to be finished into a professional finished project.
Cutting Tools are an essential part of your supplies, which should include, dressmaker shears, pinking shears, for cutting fabric. Sewing scissors for general sewing needs, and embroidery scissors for snipping threads and cutting into corners. Any sewing technique is easier with the proper scissors.
Use a seam ripper with care, for unpicking stitches. A craft knife or paper scissors are essential for cutting patterns. When cutting many identical layers or straight panels and strips, a rotary cutter and self-healing mat will make the job quicker and easier.
Needles and Threads. Choosing the right fabrics for a project is important, but it is just as important to use the right needle and thread for the fabrics you use. This will ensure that your projects will look more professional when they are finished. Essentials include 100% cotton or cotton wrapped polyester thread as well as hand and machine sewing needles sized to complement various fabric weights. Use sharps for wovens and ballpoints for knits. A needle threader is also useful. All sewing techniques are easier with the right sewing supplies.
Needles, there are many types of needles available, and getting the right needle for your fabric is important. In general, a medium-length needle is suitable for most hand-sewing tasks. Sewing machines have their own needles for different fabrics you must make sure to follow the machine manufacturer’s own recommendations. Your sewing techniques will look more professional.
There are many different threads that can be bought, some for hand sewing and others for machine work. Ask in your local crafts or fabric store for advice-getting the right type of thread is as important as getting the right color for any sewing technique. It makes it a lot easier to keep a large assortment of all kinds of sewing supplies on hand. If you intend to do a lot of sewing they will all be used in the future. That way you will not have to be concerned about a shortage of any supplies.

How to Sew Elastics the Right Way?
Filed Under Uncategorized | Leave a Comment
Types of Elastics and their Construction
Elastic is a flexible and stretchable narrow fabric made of rubber core which is wrapped in polyester, cotton, nylon or a blend of fiber threads. These exterior fibers are braided, woven or knit together to give various thicknesses and widths to the elastics. Most of the elastics are 1/8″ to 2 ½” wide. However, elastic thread can be much narrower and the decorative elastic waistbands can be extra wide. Different elastics have different degrees of stretchability. Elastics are sewn to fabrics in two ways- direct application and casing. In the first method, elastic is attached to fabric by sewing directly through the elastic and fabric. In the second method, the elastic is encased into a closed tunnel like fabric and then sewed to the fabric often around the waist, at the neckline or lower edge of a sleeve or pant leg.
Braided elastics are used in casings as they get narrowed when stretched. They can’t retain their stretch and shape if applied directly to the fabric. These light weight elastics are mainly used on sleeve hems, swim wear and leg bands. Braided non-roll elastic is appropriate for waistbands because they can remain flat when stretched.
Knitted elastics are soft, light weight, strong and appropriate for directly applying on almost any kind of garment. These elastics can also be sewed in casing. They ares best for lightweight fabrics. Many knitted elastics also have sewing line at their edges which don’t have elastic in them. So, it becomes much easier to sew these elastics to a garment.
Woven elastics, usually thicker than the other elastics, are very strong. When sewn directly onto a fabric, they can retain their width and stretch,. Woven elastics can also be sewed in casing. They are usually applied to heavy weight fabrics, such as home furnishings, car covers, bags, accessories, etc.
Transparent or clear elastics are synthetic narrow fabrics that can stretch up to four times their length and can completely recover the original size and shape. They are made of polyurethane and does not contain rubber which makes them appropriate to be used in kids garments or for people who are allergic to latex. It is primarily used in those areas that are prone to lose stretch, such as shirt bottoms, shoulder seams and necklines. They can’t be used in casings as they’ll roll over themselves.
Tips for Sewing Elastics
Choose an elastic that has the same care requirements as the finished garment.
Use those elastics which recover their original length after stretching.
Use cotton elastic with cotton garments. Wash the cotton fabric before sewing as the elastic will also shrink a little when washed.
Use nylon elastic for lingerie and swim wear. They can be machine washed but dry them in medium heat.
Polyester elastics go with almost all fabrics. They can be washed as well as dry cleaned.
Choose such threads that are compatible with fabric.
Use a ball-point needle when sewing.
Adjust the thread tension when stitching and stretching elastic.
Elastic should be tight enough to prevent fabric from drooping, but loose enough to be comfortable.
Cut the elastic according to the required length plus 1″ for finishing the ends.
When applying elastic directly to fabric, cut it about 8% shorter than the required length. It will stretch during sewing.
Use a long straight stitch or a zigzag stitch when sewing the elastic directly to fabric. A long stitch having length of three or four is best for most of the fabrics and elastic types.
If doing too much work with elastic, consider buying specialty presser foot/machine attachment that applies elastic without having to stretch it by hand.

There are a number of designs that you can consider to maximize the available space on your sewing table, including the U shape, L shape, or I shaped sewing tables.
Space in the house is always at a premium. As a lover of sewing, it can feel like a luxury to find enough room to place a sewing table in the corner of the family room, let alone having sufficient space to allocate an entire room for your sewing activities.
If you don’t have the space for a full sewing table in the available space, there are compact tables that you can expand when you need to use them. They easily fold back to around half the size when you are not using them.
If you do not have the financial means to buy the sewing table that you dream of, an innovative idea is to create extra space by using stackable containers or boxes to store supplies, using wall shelves to maximize the space you do have, and place your sewing equipment out of the reach of children.
The ideal is to have a sewing table with ample workspace and storage space.
Sewing requires a lot of sewing supplies and they are always a number of things that you need within arm’s reach.
To maximize the available space on your sewing table you can use things like sewing baskets to organize the sewing supplies and always have it within reach when needed; you can place several sewing books in a small book rack that you use when you create different designs; a finger tip cushion is a must-have; as well as a sewing table caddy where you can place those items that need to be within reach but still out of the way.
If you can afford it, the best idea is to design and have your own custom sewing table manufactured to perfectly fit your particular needs and make the best use of whatever room you have available.
There are many sewing tables on the market that can not only be space savers, but can also create space by incorporating very clever storage ideas that you can either benefit from by buying that particular sewing table or incorporating some of the ideas into your own design.

Research the Singer 201 and you’ll find more than one reference stating that the 201 is the finest sewing machine Singer ever made. While I can’t authoritatively say the same (I haven’t tried all the machines Singer ever made!), I haven’t found anything about the 201 that would make me disagree with that statement.
I really appreciate fine mechanical and electronic devices. I like old Hammond clocks and organs, tube amplifiers and vintage guitars, vintage sports cars, gizmos and gadgets like that. About 10 years ago (in a fit of mid-life crisis) I bought a used Porsche 944. When I sit down at the Singer 201 and press the foot pedal, I get a very similar feeling to that experienced when cruising down the highway in the Porsche at a way-too-fast speed — the smooth and comfortable feeling of machinery performing perfectly.
I compare it to a Porsche — and I’ve seen others compare it to driving a Ferrari!
Singer produced at least four different versions of the 201:
201-1 - Treadle version
201-2 - Potted motor and gear-driven
201-3 - External motor and belt-driven
201-4 - Hand-crank (original factory, not later conversion)
The 201 is a sturdy and heavy machine — not a portable at all! This is not a slim and sexy sports car — it’s a full-sized, classy and luxurious grand touring sedan! It’s built to last — but does need maintenance to perform its best. You’ll need to oil it regularly and also grease the gears from time to time. You can unscrew the circular silver plate on the backside of the machine to reveal the gears and the greasing points. Use regular Singer Sewing Machine gear grease (not oil!). Use sewing machine oil only at the recommended oiling points. This rotary hook machine uses a Class 66 bobbin (means very little vibration, great stitch quality, and easily found bobbins.)
The machine is easy to thread and easy to use. The fact that some of these machines are going on 80 years old and still outsewing modern machines is a telling point — they’ll probably last at least another 80 years! Maintain them well and they’ll keep sewing — well, longer than you or I probably will!
One reason the machine is so easy to use is that it is a straight stitch only machine. A single stitch … but a beautiful and perfect straight stitch! You won’t find yourself “fighting” the 201 like you might battle with low end plastic machines — less time fighting means less time fixing and redoing problems and less frustration!
Even though the machine is straight stitch only, Singer and other vendors made a host of attachments that offer a world of possibilities — free-form embroidery, buttonholes, zig-zag, blindhemming — pretty much anything you want from a quality sewing machine is easily achievable.
Best of all, prices tend to be really low (supply and demand — Singer made zillions of these machines!). You’ll often pay way less than you would for a plastic import that may die a deserved death after a few weeks or months of sporadic sewing — and you’ll gain a lifelong sewing servant.
How should you view the Singer 201? Well, think back on the Porsche/Ferrari analogy — except lower the price to less than $100! This machine purrs like the well-crafted piece of machinery it is. It feels “quality:, if you know what I mean. This machine will definitely be in your “keeper” list.
Curious — check out the Singer 201 in action!

Scissors vs. Shears
First off, though people often use the name interchangeably, scissors and shears aren’t really the same thing and are meant to perform different tasks. Shears are used for the heavier cutting jobs, whereas scissors are best used for lighter cutting jobs such as trimming or clipping threads.
Shear Strength
A pair of shears generally measures about 6 inches or more in length. To hold the shears, there is a small ring handle for the thumb, and a larger one for inserting two or three fingers. Holding the shears by placing your fingers through these rings gives better leverage to perform the heavier tasks for which shears excel
Scissors Are Smaller
Scissors range in length from 6 inches on down to 3 inches or even less. Besides being smaller than shears, the handle rings are of equal size
Choosing Quality Scissors and Shears
Most scissors are made of steel. There are two main types of steel used for scissors. The first type, carbon steel, is used to make scissors with the blade and the handle formed in one continuous piece. This type of steel is very strong and stays sharp. Scissors made from carbon steel are usually plated with nickel or chromium to prevent them from rusting.
The other type of steel scissors are those made from stainless steel. A plastic handle is usually fitted to the metal blade. These scissors aren’t as sturdy and don’t retain a sharp edge as long. They’re also harder to re-sharpen. However, they are generally much cheaper.
Types of Scissors
There are many types of scissors available. Here’s a small sampling:
* Applique Scissors: Offset for level cutting
* Bent Handle Dressmaker Shears: Allow the cutting blades to rest flat on the table
* Easy Grip Scissors: With larger handles for those having difficulty holding scissors
* Embroidery Scissors: Used for cutting embroider threads
* Finishing Shears: Either as pinking or scalloping shears, used to cut ravel-resistant seams
* Heavy-duty Shears: For cutting leather, upholstery, drapery, etc.
* Thread Snipping Scissors: For cutting loose threads off sewing
There are also shears made for left-handed people, household scissors (all-purpose, poultry shears, etc.), paper scissors for children, scrapbooking scissors, electric scissors and more.
For just about any task, there’s some kind of scissors or shears that will do the job.
Caring for Scissors and Shears
The first and foremost rule of scissors: Scissors should ONLY be used to cut the materials for which they were designed.
Do not, I repeat, do NOT use shears meant for cutting material for household tasks like cutting paper. Using scissors for something other than the materials they were intended to cut will dull the blades.
Scissors and shears should be kept dry and dust free, with an occasional oiling at the screw. Keeping them in a safe place like a sewing box, or with higher quality cutting instruments, the box they came in, will help protect the points. Also, scissors should be stored in a closed position. Setting down scissors in an open position is the most common cause of dull blades.
High quality scissors and shears can be re-conditioned by the manufacturers or other companies providing that service.
Summing Up Scissors and Shears
For scissors to be used round the house, cheaper scissors work fine. If they become dull or broken, it’s cheap to replace them. For cutting fabric and other sewing tasks, a good set of shears is a wise investment.
Take care of your scissors and shears, and they’ll reward you with easy cutting for years to come.

Sew a Warm Raincoat for Your Dog
Filed Under Uncategorized | Leave a Comment
Suitable Fabrics & Notions
For the fabric, you want 2 layers. An outer layer of waterproof fabric (or fabric that can be made waterproof), and a warm layer for next to their fur.
Suitable fabrics for the outer layer include Gore-Tex, nylon and waterproof canvas. For the inner layer consider lambswool, synthetic lambswool, or polar fleece. The amount of fabric you require will depend on the size of your dog (see next section to calculate the amount of fabric required).
We’ll also need some Velcro to fasten the coat at the neck and stomach. Try to get some Velcro at least 2″ wide (or 5cm). This coat needs 2 x 4″ pieces (or 2 x 10cm pieces) of Velcro. If you have a tiny dog, 4″ is probably overkill – use your discretion.
The final item we need is heavy duty cotton webbing (this folds over the inner and outer layers and is stitched in place). Again the amount required depends on the size of your dog.
How Much Fabric to Buy
We need 3 measurements from your dog. First measure the LENGTH of your dog from the base of his neck (about where the collar sits) to just past his tail (we want the coat to extend a little past the tail).
Next, measure the WIDTH by measuring from half way between your dog’s knee and hip, up over the rump, to the same spot on the other side.
Now we need to measure the NECK allowance so measure from mid shoulder to mid shoulder, allowing the measuring tape to droop a little as if it were a fastener on a dog coat.
The amount of fabric you need to buy is the LENGTH plus half of the NECK measurement by the WIDTH, so if your dog’s LENGTH is 22.5″ and WIDTH is 23.5″ and NECK is 16″, you need to get inner and outer fabric that measures 30.5″ by 23.5″.
The amount of webbing you need is LENGTH x 2 plus WIDTH x 2 plus NECK x 4 . So for my dog above I will need 45″ plus 47″ plus 64″, a total of 156″ or 13′.
(Special Note: - the extra webbing allowance Neck x 4 is for the strap which goes underneath the coat at your dog’s waist. A double neck allowance will cover most dogs, however if your dog or dog breed is particularly thick around the middle, you may need additional fabric and webbing).
To Make Your Pattern
Now draw out your pattern.
Place both pieces of fabric with right sides together, the waterproof fabric on top (facing you). First, draw a square which is your WIDTH on one side, and LENGTH plus ½ NECK on the other side. (See this diagram here www.sewing4dummies.com/dogcoat.html). You may want to quickly pin inside this line to hold both pieces of fabric together.
Now mark off the spot where your LENGTH measurement is, exactly half way across the WIDTH (see diagram above).
Using tailors chalk, round off each of your edges, and draw out the scoop for your dog’s neck. The width for the two top pieces which go around your dog’s neck should be at least 2.5″ (for the Velcro fasteners), but can be wider if you have a larger dog.
Pin and cut.
Now, using the spare piece left over from the neck scoop, draw another rectangle at least 2.5″ wide (for the Velcro fasteners), but can be wider if you have a larger dog, and the NECK measurement long. This is for the fastener which goes around your dog’s waist.
To Make Up
Before you start sewing, it is a good idea to check the coat on the dog. Just place one of the pieces on your dog to see whether the neck allowance is enough or too much – check the amount of overlap for fastening at the neck. Also check that the waist fastener, when attached, will fit around your dog.
Also, depending on the fabric you use, you may need to swap over your sewing machine needle for a more sturdy one, as these fabrics can be quite hard to penetrate. Test on a scrap piece of fabric first.
Now we’re ready to sew. Turn the dog coat pieces around so that they are right side out. Starting on one of the sides, pin the cotton webbing around the entire outer edge of the dog coat, being sure that it is evenly spaced. Stitch in place.
Do the same with the waist closure piece. Now stitch the waist closure piece onto the dog coat at a point that is comfortable for your dog.
We now need to attach the Velcro pieces on the neck, waist closure and side. Remember that one piece needs to be stitched on the outside, and one on the inside to ensure proper closure. Pop the coat on your dog to check the best place to put your Velcro.
Stitch in place, and that’s it.

Singer has been manufacturing home sewing machinesfor almost 160 years. Singer was founded in 1851 by Isaac Merritt Singer. Singer’s revolutionary innovations made it the leading manufacturer of sewing machines in the United States with two short years. Singer has never stopped innovating since that time. No other company has contributed nearly as much to the evolution and improvement of the sewing machine as Singer Sewing Co. Two of Singer’s most recent innovations are the SwiftSmart ThreadingTM System and Drop & SewTM Bobbin System, which make tedious threading and bobbin tasks a breeze so you can spend more time getting creative with your sewing.
Singer sewing machines are well-built and made to last. And every singer sewing machine for sale is backed by a 25-year limited warranty. Singer has also focused on making its sewing machines easy to operate, even for beginners. Many features on singer sewing machines are accessible with the touch of a single button, and Singer has made menial, time-consuming tasks like threading the machine and loading the bobbin both fast and fool-proof.
Singer has a wide selection of sewing machines: from starter sewing machines for beginners to highly sophisticated embroidery sewing machines for avid sewers. Let’s break them down into a few categories, and then we’ll look at some of the models within each category. The main categories of sewing machines are:
1) Embroidery sewing machines– these machines can “talk” to your computer to turn a complex design you create using embroidery software into a home-made work of art in a matter of minutes
2) Electronic sewing machines –– these machines have time-saving “electronic” features, such as single-button selections, automatic needle threaders, automatic buttonholing, drop feed, etc.
3) Basic sewing machines – these machines are still electric-powered, of course, but they don’t have as many electronic buttons and automated features
Singer’s product lines generally coincide with the categories of sewing machines above. The Futura line is Singer’s line of embroidery sewing machines. The following lines are electronic sewing machines: Curvy, Confidence, Touch & Sew, Advance, Ingenuity, Precision, as well as a handful of other machines. And these lines are basic Singer sewing machines: Inspiration, Esteem, and Simple.
Within each product line, there are usually several sewing machine models. For example, the Confidence line has the following electronic sewing machines: 7463 Confidence, 7465 Confidence, 7467 Confidence, 7469 Confidence, and 7470 Confidence. Within a particular product line (such as the Confidence product line), the higher the number, the better the sewing machine in terms of features, capabilities, stitch options, etc. Note that this rule does not necessarily apply when comparing one line of sewing machines to another line.
To illustrate, let’s compare the 7467 Confidence to the 7469 Confidence. Among other differences, the 7469 has 98 stitch patterns, 7 one-step buttonholes, and 12 frequent-use buttons whereas the 7467 has only 70 stitch patterns, 3 one-step buttonholes, and 6 frequent-use buttons.
Some people assume that a higher model number correlates to a higher difficulty of use. Generally, that is not true. And in many cases, the opposite is true. Higher model numbers (within a product line) have more features and options, but oftentimes those upgraded features actually make operating the sewing machine faster and easier, not more complex.

Suitable Fabrics & Notions
As noted above, you should choose a sturdy fabric such as heavy duty cotton or calico. To make one bag you’ll need half a yard of fabric (assuming the fabric width is 43″ or more). For metric sewers, you’ll need ½ metre of fabric if the fabric is at least 106cm wide.
It may also be worthwhile to invest in some quality thread, as you may be carrying some heavy items in your bag, and you cannot afford to have your bag break due to cheap quality thread!
For the handles, I recommend cotton webbing or braid about 1″ wide (2.5 cm). You’ll need 48″ of the webbing (or 122 cm).
To Make Your Pattern
There are only 5 pieces to cut out. 2 rectangles form the bag’s front and back, there is one long piece that joins the front and back (to give the bag depth), and then 2 pieces for your handles.
Lay your fabric face down, and then draw out your rectangles as follows:
Bag sides (you’ll need 2 of these) 13½” wide by 14½” tall (this gives a ½” seam allowance). In metric, this is 2 rectangles 34cm by 36cm (with a 1cm seam allowance).
Then you’ll need long rectangle measuring 42½” by 5½” (or 106cm by 12cm).
Lay them out as shown in this diagram www.sewing4dummies.com/images/bag-layout.gif and then cut out.
Take your webbing and cut 2 handles each 24″ long (or 61cm).
To Make Up
Basically, the long piece of fabric needs to be sewn along three sides of each rectangle (as shown in this diagram www.sewing4dummies.com/images/bag-sew.gif). Place one rectangle along the side of the long piece (right sides together) and start sewing. Stitch slowly when turning the corners of the rectangle. I strongly recommend that you sew each seam twice for extra strength, especially at the corners.
Now attach your handles to the bag and sew on by sewing a rectangle, then sew a cross in the middle (see this diagram www.sewing4dummies.com/images/bag-handles.gif). Again, it would be wise to double stitch these seams.
It doesn’t matter whether you attach the handles to the inside or the outside, it’s up to you. And that’s it. Very simple.

A sewing pattern will be a guide for construction of a garment in the latest styles, but a sewing project will allow for a unique outfit. For centuries sewing of clothes and anything else around the house was done by hand until the mid 1700s when the first sewing machine was invented.
Getting ready for work and school is often a very hectic time in many families so a tear in a favorite shirt or skirt can send the family unit into a tailspin. Other patterns are sophisticated and rival those used by the designers in the fashion houses. Many people get great satisfaction from the completion of a project, and a good sewing pattern can guide each person to complete a project properly. Many mothers who stay home because of new babies look for jobs that they can do from home in order to be available at home to bring up the children as well as make a decent income.
Sewing patterns are available from fabric stores, some of the superstores and from websites on the internet. Sewing Patterns Are Guides for a Variety of Jobs
Every home can use some new curtains, shades or valances from time to time, and there are some wonderful sewing patterns that provide expert directions for these projects. Sewing was once the main occupation of at least one person in every household, as clothes were needed to protect our bodies from cold. Some patterns are available for complete suits for the executive in the house.

Sewing Crafts-How to Make a Marvelously Useful and Creative Bag Caddy
Filed Under Uncategorized | Leave a Comment
Your bag caddy can easily be stored in your kitchen by hanging it from a magnetic hook on the side of your refrigerator. Or, if you prefer to keep it out of sight, place it inside of a kitchen cabinet or under the sink. Another great use would be to hang it in your bedroom closets, linen closets or bathroom cabinets. By placing a terry cloth bag caddy in these areas, it will keep your recyclable bags nice and handy for emptying the waste baskets (especially if you have a two story home), and will save you time! Also, hanging one in your garage or laundry room will also come in use. If you have a pet, it makes it easy to grab a recyclable plastic bag from your bag caddy to take with you when walking your pet.
For this project you will need the following supplies:
1 Decorative terry cloth dish towel: We chose one with a fringe edge on it. 1 Roll of thread: White or any coordinating color to match your dish towel. Sewing needle Satin ribbon: 8in. length Straight pins
Step 1: Fold the terry cloth dish towel in half with the right sides together and the wrong sides facing out.
Step 2: Secure the ends in place with straight pins all along the open side of the dish towel.
Step 3: Using your needle and thread (or sewing machine), sew a ¼ inch seam down the pinned side and be sure to remove your straight pins and cut off any loose threads.
Step 4: Next, fold your ribbon in half creating an 8 inch length. Stitch your ribbon to the top right side of the dish towel to form a loop (see below for photos).
Step 5: Turn the bag right side out and insert your recyclable plastic bags in to the bag caddie by filling it from either end until it is full.
There you have it. An organized bag caddy for your recyclable plastic bags that is a useful and practical sewing craft project, and is also a wonderful green craft project if you decide to recycle and use an older towel rather than throw it out to the trash or garage.

Questions To Ask Yourself When Buying A New Sewing Machine
Filed Under Uncategorized | Leave a Comment
So how do you make the decision on the sewing machine that is right for you? Well the first thing to do is decide what you need the sewing machine for, is it just some light repair work or something more complicated? Are you going to use it on just one type of material or many different fabrics? Is the brand you have at the moment the one you wish to purchase this time?
Are there certain functions on the sewing machine that you must have, list the features the machine needs in three categories, these should be features I must have on my sewing machine, features I would like to have and other features that would just be a bonus and might make you try something new with your sewing machine because they are there. When you do make a buying decision ensure that all the functions from your first list are available, as these are the ones you need and use, also ensure that most of your I would like to see features are also available as these are also the ones you would use most and do not get sold on features that are not on the first two lists as you will probably not use them.
Is there something about your current sewing machine you love, does it have that one killer function or is it easy to use for one reason that you would like to see in your new sewing machine. The oboist is also something you should be asking yourself about, is there something I hate about my old machine that I want to avoid with my new one?
Once you have thought through these questions and have answered them as fully as you can, you can start to look at and test the sewing machines in your stockists, please make sure that it is you who tests the sewing machines you are interested in, do not let the sales person demonstrate it for you, they will not be coming home with you when you make the purchase and it is you that needs to feel comfortable and confident in your new sewing machine, if you regularly use one type of material then take a piece with you to test the sewing machine on, the same is true if you use one function more than the others, please test it in the store before you consider making that purchase.
The final thing I would like to talk about is price, as I said earlier you might be paying hundreds of dollars for the sewing machine of your dreams, when you have found the make and model you are interested in make a note of the details, model numbers are great to use to search for on the internet and compare prices on line with those on the high street, you know you like the machine now you just have to find it at the best possible price

Generally people also are so occupied with other things that they have less spare time to devote to the crafts hobby than was true a few decades ago.
Ever more women work long hours at the office and during the few hours that they are home they prefer to hang out with the family as opposed to focusing their remaining energy on crafts.
Yet, there are sewing crafts that are easy that are easy on the pocket and do not consume a lot of time. It can be very educational for everyone to integrate a few sewing projects into the time that you spend with the family. Few families these days devote time to quality family time, but when they do that then integrating a simple sewing project into the available time could be a very valuable and fulfilling exercise.
Certain people will not agree with the idea that any type of sewing crafts can be a family activity, but sewing crafts can be a lot of fun. There are projects that the whole family can enjoy and for that reason that everyone can thoroughly enjoy and do their part in creating something to be proud of.
While smaller kids should not run sewing machines out of the potential for injury, there are many other parts of the sewing crafts that young children can safely practice. Teenagers can be shown how to safely run a sewing machine. Everyone’s safety is important in making sewing crafts an enjoyable activity for the whole family.
Potential for injury does not only weaken the potential fun, it also decreases the keenness for participating in the craft. It would be sad if it prevents folks from having any interest in trying sewing crafts, which could very well mean that they would miss out on the family fun and shared time together.
Varied classes of sewing crafts are still in demand.
The most frequently enjoyed is the making of clothing or different outfits with the use of a sewing machine. Some people are not very interested in that or do not feel that they are capable of making a complex outfit. For these folks there are other kinds of activities that can be an equal amount of fun. These include making Xmas ornaments, putting together covers for tissue boxes, making beautiful dolls, and many other ornaments that can be made through sewing.

Sewing Tips for Fleece
Filed Under Uncategorized | Leave a Comment
Even though fleece is easy to sew, there are two sewing tricks that can make your fleece experience much more pleasant!
First, you want to use a longer stitch length when you sew fleece. Rather than your normal setting of 2 or so, you may want to go up to a 4 or a 5. Some people even suggest a basting stitch for fleece!
The reason is that fleece stitches can pull through the fabric if the stitch length is too short. Longer is better when you sew fleece. The plus side of this is that it makes your sewing much faster!
Next, you want to make sure of your “right-side/wrong-side” when you sew fleece. Some people are surprised to find that fleece has a right/wrong side — the print usually appears the same from both sides. Solid colors have the same color depth regardless of the side. How can right/wrong side come into play?
The catch is that fleece will always curl to one side or the other. The side it curls towards is the “wrong” side! When you cut a piece of fleece, you’ll not the cut edge will always curl in a certain direction. Take careful note of this when you assemble fleece garments or projects; match your right/wrong sides carefully to up the quality of your finished product!
To make this a little confusing, the selvedge edge of fleece doesn’t folow this rule! The selvedge edge normally curls towards the “right” side! For best results, don’t leave your selvedge edges raw — trim them instead. After all, fleece edges won’t unravel, so there’s no real need to keep the selvedge edge.
Keep these two tricks in mind when sewing fleece and you’ll find your sewing experience much more pleasant — and the results more enjoyable!

Custom sewn lawn catcher bags are an example of a custom sewing project. For large lawn mowers and machines, protecting the exterior is important to the longevity of the equipment. Maintaining existing equipment with custom sewn covers helps a company’s bottom line, as the life of equipment will be extended.
In the military sector, custom sewing services are often recruited for backpacks, gear bags, tool cases and other durable packs. The military often needs large scale orders of custom sewn bags which an independent sewer simply cannot accommodate.
In the medical industry there are many fragile and expensive instruments. Some tools can cost over one hundred thousand dollars. But, the unpredictability of emergencies requires the transport of expensive medical devices into the field, and custom sewn cases help protect medical equipment. From tool cases with sewn handles to defibrillator cases, custom sewing is a surprising yet essential service to the medical industry.
Custom sewing also plays an important role in the retail and promotions sector. Custom imprinted tote bags are great promotional items at trade shows, events and in stores. A custom sewing contractor, because of their long run and short run capabilities, embroidery and screen printing offerings, can provide affordable promotional bags and totes. For fitness centers and schools a custom sewn messenger bag or backpack can really emphasize the identity of the brand or establishment. Again, large custom sewn quantities can be handled by custom sewing contractors with efficiency in mind.
Custom sewing methods allow for modifications like embroidery, Integration of multiple materials, silk screening, straps and various sizes. The industrial and commercial sewing methods allow for fast production of large quantities of custom sewn products. The sewing machines and technicians in the industrial sewing industry are trained to create highly efficient processes to cut costs and create useful products. Often military product orders call for thousands of custom sewn backpacks. An industrial company may need a full line of lawn catcher covers for a new assembly of lawn machines.
