I got this little hand held sewing machine, and have no clue whatsoever how to use it. I read the directions and am still lost. Does anyone have any pointers??

I’ve been sewing by hand since i was a teenager (I’m 4″9 so i always have to alter my clothing) Now that I have kids it takes a little longer to get things fixed so I guess its’ time to invest on a machine.

I noticed in the “tools” list for beginners, there is a special foot for a sewing machine that I don’t have. I have a very basic beginner machine.

I have been using clear thread in my bobbin and the top spool at the same time. I started having trouble with my sewing machine and had to have it replaced. A few people included sewing machine store owner told me only to use clear thread in my bobbin. It defeats the purpose of sewing with clear thread if you ask me. HELP I don’t want to ruin another machine.

I’m sewing my halloween costume, and I have to set the tension on my sewing machine all the way to 9 to get the seam on the bottom fairly straight. Is it broken? Should I have to set it all the way up there?

It’s a Brother LS-1217 machine.

I’m new to sewing, and I don’t know what sort of things I should watch for when buying a machine. I also don’t know what kind of price I should expect to pay if I want something that’s good enough to last me a long time, but doesn’t have gadgets I don’t need.

I hope to use it to work with cotton and linen primarily if that helps.

Thanks!

I live in San Jose, CA and I want to make a slipcover for my sofa. My problem is that I don’t own a sewing machine and in an attempt to save money on buying a slipcover I want to make it myself. I was wondering if there is a place to rent one. I’m worried that if I get a seamstress to do it for me I won’t really be saving any money. Any suggestions?

What do the numbers on sewing machine needles mean? I just replaced my needle and my old one was 90/14 I believe and my new one is 80/12.
Thanks! I’m thinking its a normal tip. I buy the Schmetz Universal Needles.

I’ve started making my own clothes recently (mainly reconstructing old clothes), but I don’t have a sewing machine so I’ve been having to do it all by hand. What is a good, basic sewing machine that can speed things up a bit? I want to not only continue reconstructing clothes, but possibly making jackets, dresses, shirts, etc. from scratch. So it needs to be able to handle some more heavy-duty projects, too.

What should a beginner at sewing make?

I just learned how to use a sewing machine yesterday. I want to start making simple/easy to make apparel and gradually start to make things that are more difficult to make. What do you recommend I (as a beginner) should make?

The first project I want to undertake is making curtains for my apartment. odd sized windows have made for a big headache in looing to buy them. I also think i might want to fiddle in making clothing for myself here and there.
I have wanted a sewing machine for years anyway :) What are the makes and models experienced ’sewers’ would recommend for a beginner looking to do these kinds of projects?
